Introducing Industrial Injection X-Series Pistons

Jul 4, 2026by Scott Dana

Industrial Injection is proud to introduce the new X-Series Pistons line — a complete piston and ring program built for Cummins, Duramax, and Power Stroke diesel engine platforms.

X-Series Pistons were developed to give diesel builders a better way to choose the right piston setup for the way an engine is actually being used. Whether the goal is a stock-style rebuild, a hard-working tow setup, a street performance build, or a higher-horsepower engine with larger camshaft requirements, the X-Series line gives customers and shops a clear path forward.

This launch is also about availability. Industrial Injection has used this style of piston package in our own engine program and customer builds for years, but demand continued to grow. X-Series allows us to expand coverage, improve availability, and offer a more complete piston program built around Industrial Injection specifications.

X-Series Pistons were developed around the way diesel engines are actually built, used, and pushed.

Built Around Real Diesel Engine Builds

When someone calls in asking which piston they need, the first question is not just, “What engine do you have?” The better question is, what are you doing with the truck?

A daily-driven rebuild does not need the same piston package as a heavy towing setup. A street performance engine does not always need the same piston as a race application with a larger camshaft. X-Series Pistons were built around that decision-making process.

Instead of forcing every customer into one option, the X-Series line is organized into three build levels:

  • Stock — for stock-style rebuilds and direct replacement applications.
  • Coated & Chamfered — for street performance, heavy towing, workhorse applications, and builds that will see more heat, load, boost, or cylinder pressure.
  • Fly Cut, Coated & Chamfered — for higher-performance builds that require additional piston-to-valve clearance for larger camshaft applications.
X-Series Pistons are available in three build levels: Stock, Coated & Chamfered, and Fly Cut, Coated & Chamfered.

Stock, Coated & Chamfered, or Fly Cut: Which One Do You Need?

Stock X-Series Pistons

The Stock option is designed for diesel engine rebuilds where the goal is a clean, reliable replacement piston package. These are a strong choice for stock-style engines, daily-driven applications, and rebuilds where the engine is being returned to a dependable operating condition.

Coated & Chamfered X-Series Pistons

The Coated & Chamfered option is the step up for engines that will be worked harder. This may include street performance trucks, heavy towing applications, work trucks, and builds where added heat and load protection are important.

The chamfering process removes the sharp edge near the top of the piston. As pistons expand from heat, that softer edge helps reduce the chance of the piston catching or scoring the cylinder wall. The top coating is designed to help reflect heat away from the piston crown in higher-load, higher-temperature applications.

All X-Series pistons feature coated skirts. Coated & Chamfered and Fly Cut, Coated & Chamfered options also receive a top coating.

Fly Cut, Coated & Chamfered X-Series Pistons

The Fly Cut, Coated & Chamfered option is built for higher-performance applications where piston-to-valve clearance matters. This is most commonly needed when running larger camshafts that require valve reliefs in the piston.

Fly cuts are not simply about making a piston “more performance.” They are about clearance. If the camshaft and valve train combination requires additional piston-to-valve clearance, the fly cut option gives builders that needed relief while keeping the benefits of the coated and chamfered piston package.

Matched, Balanced, and Built as a Complete Set

One of the key advantages of X-Series Pistons is that they are sold as matched sets. Each piston kit is balanced as a complete set, which helps simplify the engine-building process and gives builders a more complete piston package right out of the box.

For shops and engine builders, this matters. Instead of buying individual pistons and sending them out to be balanced before assembly, X-Series piston kits are prepared as a matched set from the start.

Each piston also includes piston-specific information to help support proper ring installation and assembly.

Designed for Real Machine Work

During an engine rebuild, block decking is often part of the process. When material is removed from the deck surface, piston protrusion can become an issue. On the Coated & Chamfered and Fly Cut, Coated & Chamfered X-Series pistons, Industrial Injection uses a reduced compression height to help support real-world rebuild conditions.

This helps builders maintain a more practical piston setup after machine work and can reduce the need for extra changes such as thicker head gaskets or additional cylinder head modifications in many applications.

Application-Specific Details Matter

Diesel pistons do not all fail the same way across every platform. Some failures come from excessive heat, poor tuning, aggressive timing, or fueling outside the piston bowl. Other failures are more common to certain engine families.

For example, Duramax pistons are known for piston cracking concerns in certain applications. X-Series Duramax pistons use a de-lipped combustion bowl design to remove the sharp edge around the bowl area and help reduce cracking concerns in properly built and tuned engines.

No piston can fix bad tuning, excessive EGT, poor operating conditions, or an engine combination that is pushed beyond its limits. But the X-Series line was built with those real-world failure points in mind.

X-Series Ring Kits Are Also Available

In addition to complete piston kits, Industrial Injection also offers X-Series ring kits. These are a strong option for builders who already have usable pistons but need a quality ring pack for a rebuild or refresh.

Select X-Series applications include PVD-coated top rings. PVD, or physical vapor deposition, is a coating process used to create a hard, wear-resistant surface on the ring. Availability varies by engine platform and application, so customers should check the specific product listing for details.

Built for Shops, Builders, and Diesel Owners

The goal with X-Series Pistons is simple: make Industrial Injection pistons the go-to choice for diesel engine builds.

For repair shops, machine shops, engine builders, and diesel owners, that means a piston line that is easier to understand, easier to order, and better aligned with how these engines are actually used.

Whether you are rebuilding a stock engine, building a tow-ready workhorse, or putting together a higher-performance diesel engine, X-Series Pistons give you a clear starting point.
