Recommended Components to Inspect Before Installation

Before completing your 6.7L Cummins engine rebuild, inspect the supporting components that will be reused. Internal engine failures can leave metal debris, oil contamination, or other damage that may affect the reliability of the replacement engine.

Industrial Injection recommends inspecting the following components:

  • Cylinder Head: Inspect for cracks, warpage, valve seat wear, guide wear, and other damage. Have the cylinder head professionally inspected and machined as necessary before installation.
  • Valvetrain Installation: Follow the Hamilton Cams Flat Tappet Conversion Kit installation requirements. Verify proper installation of the supplied pushrods and adjustable rocker arms, including valve lash, lubrication, and component compatibility.
  • Fuel Injectors: Have injectors tested for proper operation before reuse. Fuel delivery problems can contribute to piston damage, excessive cylinder temperatures, and engine failure.
  • Turbocharger: Inspect for excessive shaft play, oil leaks, damaged compressor or turbine wheels, and contamination. Repair or replace damaged components before installation.
  • Fuel System: Inspect the high-pressure fuel pump, fuel lines, filters, and associated components for wear or contamination. Correct any existing fuel system problems before starting the rebuilt engine.
  • Cooling System: Inspect the radiator, thermostat, hoses, EGR cooler, and related components for restrictions, leaks, or contamination. Flush or replace components as necessary.
  • Intake and Charge Air System: Inspect the intercooler, intake piping, and charge air connections for debris, excessive oil accumulation, or damage that could affect the replacement engine.
  • Engine Oil System: Inspect and thoroughly clean any reused external oil lines, fittings, and related components. Remove contamination from any previous engine failure.
  • Exhaust and Emissions Components: Inspect the exhaust manifold, EGR components, and associated connections for damage, restrictions, or contamination that could affect engine operation.

Important: Always identify and correct the cause of the original engine failure before installing your rebuilt short block. Reusing damaged or contaminated components can lead to repeat engine failure and may affect warranty coverage.
